First 5 Things You Should do After Receiving a DUI

Drunk driving costs approximately $199 billion every year in the United States. However, if you're convicted of a DUI, it could cost you much more than just money. The long-term social and professional effects could haunt you for many years to come.

This is why it's important to be prepared. Whether someone you know has been arrested or you have, here's what you need to do immediately after you receive a DUI.

Find Alcohol, DUI, or Drug Lawyers
Without a doubt, there's nothing more important than having a qualified, experienced DUI lawyer helping you understand your case and go through the proceedings. In fact, good DUI lawyers are generally what stands between the accused and a harsh sentence. Before doing anything else, you should conduct a thorough search for attorneys near you. In addition, search for the right attorney. Certain criminal defense lawyers have also served as alcohol and drug lawyers, representing people charged with similar crimes.

Write Everything Down
Some drug lawyers may ask you for a description of the arrest. The more detailed your account of the incident is, the better. More often than not, the details are what could win or lose you the case. As soon as possible after your DUI is issued, make sure you create a written account of everything that led up to that point and all of the proceedings that occurred after.

Report to Court
The worst thing you can do is miss your court date. If you want to be in the judge's good graces - and you definitely do - you should always adhere to the dates they have set for you. Good behavior is key in these situations.

Carry Out the Punishment
If convicted or sent to a diversion program, you should always follow the judge's orders to the letter. No matter what the punishment is, be it substance abuse counseling or nightly driving classes, you should do your absolute best to carry it out to the court's specification. The more timely and dedicated you are, the better off you'll be in the long run.

Don't Obsess
The truth is that people, while they make poor decisions and mistakes, are often granted opportunities to make up for them and learn from the experience. Maintain good communication both with the court and with your attorney and follow the rules they set for you. Take the time to learn from this experience and do better in the future.

Getting a DUI may very well be one of the most stressful events in your life, but with the right lawyer and the right attitude, you can come through just fine.
