According to MADD, driving under the influence costs the U.S. approximately $199 billion every year. But when you're caught driving under the influence and charged with DUI, it will cost you more than just money.

You should never drive while intoxicated, but if you're charged with DUI, there are a few things you absolutely need to do. It can be a confusing time and a frustrating one, but here are five of the most important things you need to do after being charged with DUI.

Seek Out Legal Counsel
First and foremost, you will need a lawyer. No matter how well you think you understand your state's laws, Virginia lawyers are going to know Virginia state law better than you. Experienced DUI lawyers will be able to represent you in court and provide pertinent legal advice in regards to your next steps.

Go to Court
Whatever you do, you absolutely cannot miss your court date. It's imperative that you show up and exhibit responsibility for your actions. Whether you're convicted or not is a matter of the charges you're faced with, but fear of conviction shouldn't stop you from going to court.

Complete Your Sentence
If you're convicted, you'll have to endure some form of sentence. Whether it's community service and additional driving courses or something else, make sure you do it. If you have questions about DUI sentencing in Virginia, that's where your Virginia lawyers come in. But no matter what, make sure you carry out the punishment assigned to you.

Carry Insurance
After a DUI, your insurance company may terminate your policy. If that happens, you need to make sure to get the proper insurance immediately. In addition, you should carry proof of insurance with you at all times.

Get Your License Back
After a DUI conviction, your license will likely be revoked. In order to get it back, you must demonstrate responsibility and awareness under the law. You must also show that you've either completed or are in the process of completing the punishment given to you.

These are all important steps to take, but the only way to avoid this lengthy process is to not drive under the influence.
