Convicted of DUI? A Guide to Getting Back On Your Feet

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, of the 300,000 people who drive drunk daily only 4,00, or between one to 2%, are arrested. If you are part on this minority, it can feel like you've been singled out by the universe for particularly harsh treatment, but in fact this could be one of the best, most life changing moments of your life.

The Bad
We don't want to risk diminishing the dangers of driving under the influence, or the possible negative effects it can have on your live. A DUI can affect your insurance rate, saddle you with huge fines, and even your damage your future employability. If you have been charged with a DUI the very first thing you must do is find a DUI lawyer. A DUI lawyer will not only be able to help you mount a strong defense against the charges, but also explain to you the legal landscape of life after a DUI.

The Good
It can be hard to see past the damage a DUI can do, but if you are willing to work hard, you can find a way to turn this terrible mistake into an opportunity for personal growth and development.

Getting Sober
While not everyone that is convicted of a DUI suffers from Alcoholism, this is a great opportunity to take the time and really examine your relationship with alcohol.
Take a second to look over the warning signs and as yourself honestly, how much does alcohol affect you?

1. Do you drink in response to life stresses or as a way of minimizing other intense emotions, like depression?

2. Have you experienced a marked decline in your work performance that you or others have noticed?

3. Do you neglect your responsibilities to your job or your family?

4. Do you spend an inordinate time thinking about alcohol, or when your next drink will be?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then this DUI might be your opportunity to combat your addiction, and turn your life towards a more positive direction.

Doing Outreach
Outreach is a vitally important part of changing the minds of others. Unless you know someone who has been charged with a DUI in the past it can seem like something of a myth, like something that only happens to other people.

Talk about your experience with friends and family. Volunteer to go into public high schools and share your experience with the students. You might feel embarrassed at first, but by putting a face on the issue, you are providing an incredible service in the fight against drunk driving.

A DUI is a life changing thing, but once the whirlwind of DUI lawyers and attorneys has ended, once you've submitted yourself to the judge's decision, you have to pick up the pieces and keep going. How you chose to do that is up to you.
