5 Dangerous DUI Myths Debunked

Did you know that the average drunk driver has been intoxicated behind the wheel at least 80 times before getting caught? It's a scary statistic, but it's the reality. Despite the facts, there are still some dangerous DUI myths floating around out there. To help you stay safe, here are a few of those myths, busted.

MYTH: You can only be charged with DUI if you're behind the wheel.

Wrong. If a police officer sees you drunk or thinks you may be drunk and knows that you were recently driving, you can be charged with DUI. Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but it will get you caught, no matter what.

MYTH: You can't be charged if your BAC is under .08.

While the legal limit is .08, you can still be arrested if your BAC is lower than that. Remember, buzzed driving is still drunk driving. Better to be safe than end up needing DUI attorneys.

MYTH: You can lie to the police.

This is hands down the worst idea you could possibly have in a situation where you're being pulled over for drunk driving. It's in your best interest to be honest with the police because if not, you can also be charged with obstruction of justice.

MYTH: If you limit yourself to two drinks, you won't be at risk for a DUI.

Two drinks can mean nothing for a big person with a lot of body mass, but if you're only five feet tall and weigh 120 pounds, those two drinks are going to have a much stronger effect on you. There's no specific number of drinks that won't get you arrested.

MYTH: If you drive carefully, you'll be fine.

Sobriety checkpoints don't care whether you're driving carefully or not. The truth is that if you step into the driver seat while you're drunk or even buzzed, there's a very good chance you'll be arrested.

If you're facing DUI charges, these strategies won't help you. DUI lawyers will. A good attorney should be the first person on your mind after a DUI. But if you stop and think before getting into the car, you can avoid the DUI altogether.
