Now that it’s officially autumn, the Shenandoah Valley is ablaze in the colorful foliage of the season. That, along with the building excitement of the big homecoming weekend at James Madison University, only a few weeks away, has many university students and locals heading out to fun events.
One potential problem with these fall celebrations is that many involve consuming alcohol. While drinking is legal for those 21 and older, drinking and driving remains illegal everywhere. Read on to learn some tips for having a safer autumn experience.
Don’t overdrink
Pace yourself for day-long events by alternating water or soft drinks with each alcoholic beverage you consume. Make sure to eat as well, as drinking on an empty stomach hits you harder.
Maintain the buddy system
Regardless of where your plans take you, make sure you have a friend accompany you. Not only is that far more entertaining, but it can also keep you much safer. Predators look for solo students to accost rather than those in groups.
Arrange for sober rides before leaving
Failing to plan for a sober ride home can lead to the untenable situation of having your least drunk friend get behind the wheel. That’s never a viable choice. Using public transportation or a rideshare app can be the difference between a car wreck or DUI charge and getting a good night’s sleep.
If you get stopped for DUI
Remain polite and compliant while maintaining your rights against self-incrimination. Exert your right to remain silent, refuse the roadside sobriety test and answer no questions until you speak with a criminal defense attorney.
